In her early adulthood, Elaine Brown relocated from her native Philadelphia to Los Angeles with the dream of becoming a songwriter. Brown’s life would soon change after meeting Alprentice “Bunchy” Carter, founder and leader of the California chapter of the Black Panther Party. Brown — captivated by the Party’s focus on empowerment and liberation — became heavily involved, ultimately becoming the organization’s chairwoman.
