Today everyone takes for granted they can use a public bathroom anywhere in this country. As a child in the 19 50's, that was not the case for African Americans. There were no bathrooms available for us traveling Route 301 from eastern rural North Carolina to Washington, DC. Our bathrooms were the woods beside the highway. It took me a couple decades to free myself of that humiliation and to not hesitate to ask to use a public bathroom. I'm so grateful for those who fought for the civil rights I enjoy today.
