On June 1, 1921, a white mob attacked the Greenwood District of Tulsa, Okla., burning forty city blocks and killing up to 300 black residents. The incident was triggered after a white woman was startled by a black man and screamed. Rumors spread and the story morphed into a rape allegation setting off a riot, which resulted in the destruction of a prosperous black community.
