The Orangeburg Massacre

On February 8th, 1968, state troopers fired into a mostly black crowd on the campus of South Carolina State College, killing three students and wounding 27 others, in what became known as the "Orangeburg Massacre". Students staged a protest to desegregate a local "whites only" bowling alley and built a bonfire. Police escorted the fire department to extinguish the bonfire, then fired into the crowd.
