Truman Orders Integration of U.S. Armed Services

On July 26, 1948, President Truman ordered the integration of the U.S. Armed Forces. Though black troops had fought in every major U.S. military campaign since the American Revolution, they suffered continuously from racial discrimination. The last all-black military unit was disbanded in 1954, but the campaign for equality in the military continued.
