The Disappearance of Lloyd Gaines
Moments In Civil Rights History
On March 19, 1939, 28-year old Lloyd Gaines, a black man, was reported missing. In the 1930s, he was the plaintiff in one of the most important court cases in the U.S. civil rights movement. Gaines was denied admission to the all-white University of Missouri Law School. He sued, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in his favor. Another lawsuit was planned, but Gaines disappeared. His fate is unknown.
