On June 9th, 1963, Fannie Lou Hamer and other activists were arrested in Winona, Mississippi. They had refused to leave the white section of a Greyhound bus they'd been traveling on. At the Winona bus depot, the activists continued their protest by sitting at the white only lunch counter inside the terminal. Hamer was beaten by white jailers, and never fully recovered from the attack.
