Shirley Franklin never intended to run for office. Satisfied with her role as Atlanta’s director of cultural affairs, colleagues Maynard Jackson and Andrew Young encouraged her to run for the city’s highest office. After careful consideration, she entered the 2001 mayoral race and achieved history, becoming Atlanta’s first female mayor.
