On May 28, 1963, students and faculty from Tougaloo College staged a sit-in at the Woolworth’s lunch counter in Jackson, Miss. Joan Trumpauer Mulholland recalls her initial role in the protest as a spotter, keeping an eye on events unfolding that day. She ultimately made her way into Woolworth’s, taking a seat at the counter and tells of the violence that ensued.
