From Duke to Tougaloo

Joan Trumpauer Mulholland

Joan Trumpauer Mulholland was attending Duke University as the civil rights movement was taking shape in the early 1960s. She recalls a Presbyterian youth meeting where she met student protesters involved in sit-ins. She decided to join the movement and began participating in protests. Frustrated with the negative response from Duke officials, she left at the end of the semester. Feeling that integration should be a two-way street, Mulholland applied and was accepted to Tougaloo College, a historically black school in Jackson, Miss. She recalls her experience, and ultimate acceptance by other students at the college.
