A Teenager at the March on Washington

Joan Lee Nelson of Memphis, Tenn., was 16 years old when she attended the March on Washington in August 1963. Overcome by the heat, she fainted. She recalled, "The people around me picked me up and lifted me up over their heads [...] I remember waking up and looking up at the sky [...] It was my ancestors' hands carrying me."
