Flonzie Brown Wright served as the first Black female elected official in Mississippi since Reconstruction. She helped to register thousands of voters in Mississippi, but faced challenges while attempting to register herself. After her experience, Brown Wright decided to run for public office. On Nov. 5, 1968, Brown Wright was voted to the position of election commissioner.
