In 1989, Charles L. Blockson, founder of Temple University's Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection, embarked on a project to establish African-American historical markers throughout Philadelphia. Starting with his very first marker, honoring architect Julian Abele at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Blockson discusses how these iconic signs inspire lessons in black history throughout the City of Brotherly Love.
