The Murder of Elbert Williams
Mildred Bond Roxborough
Mildred Bond Roxborough, special assistant at the NAACP, shares the story of Elbert Williams. Williams was a charter member of the NAACP Branch in Brownsville, Tenn., which was founded by Roxborough's father, Ollie Bond, in March 1939. Murdered in 1940 for his civil rights activities, Williams is the first-known NAACP member killed for his activism. Seventy-five years later, the city of Brownsville honored Williams with a memorial plaque at a downtown intersection.
