Integrating Asheville, N.C., Schools
Harold Epps
Harold Epps' father was an attorney who filed a lawsuit with Thurgood Marshall to integrate the UNC Law school in 1949. In 1962, he decided that his children would integrate the school system in Asheville, NC. Though his experience was relatively mild compared to others, he said, "I do remember being called the 'N' word, and I do remember being spit on, but we were trained that we were not to respond."
