Denver’s Sit-In Movement

Purnell Steen

Purnell Steen speaks about the sit-in movement in Denver, Colorado during the 1960s and the successes of that movement in desegregating local businesses. He recalled, “There was a department store … they had maids and janitors … but they did not have any people of color. We met with the manager of the store who assured us…as long as he was the manager … there would never be a person of color.”
