On January 1, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. Contrary to popular belief, the act itself did not abolish slavery and it applied only to enslaved people in states that were in rebellion in 1863. Slavery would not become illegal until the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment in 1865.
